The State of the World's Children 2007: Women and children

As every year, UNICEF presents its edition of the State of the World's Children, this time focused on women and children.

Analyze the situation of women in the world and point out the importance of gender equality.

As he remarks, with what I am sure most of you will agree, it is that to the extent that women have the same possibilities as men to be independent, the right to receive education and the possibility of working, boys and girls They will have well-being.

Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director affirms that "Gender equality and child welfare are inextricably linked."

Although there have been small advances, the situation of women in the world is still a pending issue.

There are still millions of discriminated girls and women who do not have access to education, who suffer violence, disease and live in conditions of extreme poverty.

But without going any further, in developed countries, men still receive a higher salary than women before the same job.

UNICEF proposes seven measures to be taken essential to achieve the autonomy of women and therefore the well-being of children.

That is objective number three of the "Millennium Development Goals" that by 2015 intends to be met.
