Don't load them too much! Prevent the misuse of backpacks

With the return to school the backpacks are removed from the closet and loaded again to take everything necessary to school. Luckily, the little ones don't have much to take home, lunch and little else. But as they grow the backpack is loaded more and more and problems may come.

Doctors estimate that before the age of 15, between 50 and 70% of children will have suffered back pain. That is why they recommend that schoolchildren exercise regularly and that the weight of the backpack does not exceed 10% of its weight.

Coinciding with the beginning of the school year, the Collegiate Medical Organization (WTO) and the Kovacs Foundation, a scientific institution specializing in neck and back ailments, have presented a campaign that affects the practice of sport in the family to prevent back pain.

This prevention is essential, since the probable infant back pain can become chronic and affect adult life. One of the origins of that pain is the weight of the backpacks that lead to school or lack of physical exercise and sedentary life that predominates in the day-to-day life of minors.

Exercise is essential to develop the muscles of the little ones, and it has been proven effective in preventing back ailments. Wheel backpacks are a valid option if they don't carry too much weight, and the installation of lockers in schools is a good idea (although unfeasible at the moment, I'm afraid).

Remember that if the little ones carry a backpack, it should be placed relatively low, in the lower back, as close to the body as possible, and secured with a belt so that it does not swing. The weight should not exceed 10% of the child's weight.

The incidence of back diseases increases after 10 years, but the prevention campaign focuses on younger schoolchildren. It is never too early to learn a healthy lifestyle, too taking care of the back when going to school.
