Urine infection during pregnancy

Urine infection is the most common bacterial infection during pregnancy., since between 4 and 10% of pregnant women suffer from it. At this stage, the woman's urinary tract is more prone to the multiplication of bacteria.

It usually appears in the first trimester, and if it is not treated, between 25-30% of these women will develop pyelonephritis or acute kidney infection in the second or third trimester, which could lead to premature birth and other complications.

The urine culture performed in the first gestational control may be positive, so the appropriate treatment for cystitis should be initiated according to the prescription of our doctor.

It could also happen that the infection arises later, so if we detect your symptoms (pain or burning when urinating, need to urinate more frequently by expelling small amounts, the usual color and smell of urine ...) we will have to see a doctor immediately to collect samples and confirm the infection, starting treatment as soon as possible. The usual is the oral antibiotic treatment (some can be taken during pregnancy) for 7 or 10 days, and always keep the treatment for as long as the doctor has prescribed and not abandon it before even if they feel improvements.

After the treatment, sediment and urine culture will be monitored to check the cure. In case of acute pyelonephritis, the specialist will most likely order the admission of the future mother to a hospital, given its severity.
