Children with disabilities matter

A report prepared by the Every Disabled Child Matters organization has brought to light the plight of children with some type of disability.

Children and adolescents consulted said they felt often excluded in games and leisure activities. They have said that the other children made them feel as if they were a nuisance or did not consider them to participate in recreational activities.

Although it is an investigation carried out in the United Kingdom it is a reality that happens everywhere. Children with disabilities are the most exposed to exclusion in the school environment.

According to article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have the right to have their opinions taken into account in decisions that affect them. It should not be a daily struggle to try to be accepted by other children, but a natural right to equal opportunities.

As parents, we have a responsibility to educate our children in an environment of tolerance and respect for other children since they are very young. Inculcate them that all children are equal only that some have more visible defects than others, and awaken the awareness of integrating those who present some impediment to communicate or move. Of course, there is nothing more effective than leading by example.
