How a safe crib should be

The cradle is not just a piece of furniture. It is one of the most important purchases we will make for our baby. It has to be comfortable, practical, beautiful, but above all things it must meet certain safety standards. Let's see how a safe crib should be.

Since the baby will spend several hours a day in the crib, either sleeping or playing (except in the case of families who collect), it is essential that it becomes a cozy space where you feel safe and comfortable.

The most important safety tips to keep in mind are:

• There should be no protrusions, no sharp corners, or edges where the child could hook the clothes.

• The bars must have a distance of separation between them of 4 and 7 cm so that the child can not put the head.

• The mattress should fit the bed base perfectly, without leaving gaps either on the sides, on the headboard or on the feet.

• The crib must be stable.

• The protector that is placed around the cradle to avoid blows must be securely fastened, without loose ties or leftover parts where the child could put his hand, leg or any other part of the body and get hooked.

• If it is made of wood, like most, it should not have a smooth finish, without splinters or of course nails or protruding screws.

• It must have a minimum height of 60 centimeters from the base of the mattress to the top of the bars to prevent the child from falling.

• Also with respect to the height, and since most of the cribs have two adjustable heights, the mattress should be lowered as soon as we notice that the baby starts trying to stand up. This way we will avoid falls.

• Finally, if the crib is then converted into another piece of furniture such as a bed, a sofa or a desk, it is important to verify that once converted it also complies with the necessary safety measures.
