The RACE (Real Automobile Club of Spain) has just published the first evaluation report on child restraint systems of 2017. In the comparison they have been evaluated 42 car seats for children in which its safety is analyzed against frontal and lateral impacts, as well as its ease of handling, ergonomics, the content of dangerous substances, the cleaning and preparation of each product.
Of the total, 24 chairs have been classified as "satisfactory" and 10 as "Acceptable". At the bottom of the table, eight chairs have failed to exceed the minimum quality levels required, with three models that have obtained the rating of "unsatisfactory" and five with "Very Unsatisfactory."
The i-Size, the best rated
The novelty of 2017 is the largest number of models with i-Size, European approval for ISOFIX car seats, which is an increase of 30% compared to the number of chairs analyzed in previous editions.
In addition, in this test 13 models approved with the ECE R-129 (i-Size) standard have been evaluated, where all models, with the exception of one, have exceeded the required quality levels, and mostly with the qualification of "Satisfactory." The only i-Size chair that has not passed the recommendation levels of the clubs has been due to evidence of the presence of toxic substances present in the tissues, not the safety of the impact tests.
What does i-Size mean?
The European i-Size approval standard requires that chairs meet certain characteristics. They must pass a lateral crash test (in addition to the front and rear), the range is measured based on the child's height (and not his weight and age), and establishes that all children must travel backwards until at least 15 months
The new i-Size regulation does not replace previous regulations, but means an evolution in the security of SRIs. It is an exclusive regulation for ISOFIX car seats. Meanwhile, the ECE-R 44 will continue to regulate the car seats that are fastened with the vehicle belt and the ISOFIX chairs for a few years. The two regulations will live together for a while.
Rating by groups:
Children's Chairs up to approximately 1 year (0-10 kg)
Valid for babies with a height between 40 and 85 cm. Equipped with harnesses for optimum support, installation must always be carried out in the opposite direction of travel. The correct installation and validity with the new standard must be consulted with the vehicle manufacturer.

It can be fastened with ISOFIX anchors or with three anchor points.

Child restraint system for newborn children up to approximately twelve years or with a maximum weight of 36 kg, in both directions of the march. Depending on age, weight and height, they may use safety harness or safety belt for group II. They can be fastened with ISOFIX or with a three-point belt for fastening.
Unsatisfactory
Approximately 1 to 7 years (9-25 kg)
With a maximum weight of up to 25 kg, they can be placed in both directions of the march according to the weight and height of the child, which can be attached with harness or ventral shield system, and for group II with the seat belt of the car. The use for group I allows it to be anchored to the car by means of an ISOFIX system or a three-point anchorage belt.
Unsatisfactory
Approximately 1 to 12 years (9 to 36 kg)
Suitable for a range of use for children from one year and 9 kg to 12 years and 36 kg, usable in both directions of the march with harness. They are perfectly suitable for long journeys and from 18 kg (group II) can be used with the three-point belt. It is recommended to maintain the backrest up to 36 kilos to avoid risks of lateral impact.
