"With you, like at home", the campaign of the Vall D'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona to humanize the care of premature babies and their families

The Neonatology Service of the Maternal and Child Hospital of Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona has launched the campaign "With you, at home", with the aim of raise funds to humanize the hospital process of the premature baby and his family.

The hospital knows that the family is the most important thing for the newborn, so it intends to create rooms for exclusive use so that parents lose the fear of caring for a premature baby and acquire the necessary skills to face this situation with the support of a team of professionals.

The stress of the premature baby and his family

According to data from the Spanish Society of Neonatology, in Spain premature births increased 36% in the last 20 years, and one in 13 babies is born early.

When a baby arrives in the world early, the family falls apart. Childbirth is not expected and baby and mom should be separated. Begin fears, uncertainty, tears, anxiety… Armando told us in first person what it means to have a premature baby, and the difficulties that the family is going through in this situation.

But also the baby suffers significant stress being deprived of certain family care, both physical (breastfeeding or constant environmental stimuli), as well as emotional (skin-to-skin contact and attention of parents and siblings that help reduce anxiety and loneliness).

Vall d'Hebron Hospital has been working with neonates and their families for 15 years, so they are fully aware of the importance of premature contact with their parents.

It has been observed that the involvement and integration of the family in their hospital care, reduce the incidence of possible health complications, hospitalization time and improves brain and psychomotor development, minimizing sequelae.

"With you, at home"

For all this, the Vall d'Hebron Hospital has decided to launch the "With you, at home" campaign with the aim of creating a new Center for Advanced Neonatology to help improve and humanize the lives of families and premature babies during their hospital stay.

The campaign aims to raise 880,000 euros to create cozy rooms inside the hospital that foster the privacy of families, and where parents can feel comfortable with their babies (as if they were in their own home) and advised 24 hours by professionals.

The recreation of an intimate, comfortable environment and as close as possible to a home, it will allow parents to gain confidence and security, in order to start life outside the hospital.

The fundraising campaign of the "Contigo, como en casa" project has been led by the small Álvaro, who came to the world prematurely in week 25 with 650 grams of weight. Both he and his parents are the protagonists of this true story, which moves and reaches the heart of the spectator for the courage, strength and love that the images give off.

Anyone can support the campaign, making a donation or sharing the project on their social networks under the hashtag #BornToBeExtraordinary. So far, 33% of the objectives have been reached, so there is still a way to go.

From Babies and More we join this wonderful initiative, and we hope that very soon it can be a reality for premature babies and their families.
