First uterus transplant in the United States

According to some current news, in 2002 the first uterus transplant was performed in Saudi Arabia, although the news at the time affirms that the intervention was carried out in the year 2000. But the issue of interest is that seven years ago, the organ of A 46-year-old woman was implanted into a 26-year-old woman who lost her uterus due to postpartum hemorrhage, when she had her first child.

But the uterus had to be removed after three months, exactly 99 days after the intervention, a scanner showed an obstruction in one of the blood vessels that allowed circulation in the uterus, so it was considered an advance in medicine but with a success partial.

Now, surgeons at the Downtown Hospital in New York, they will try again, they will perform the first uterus transplant in the United States, but will be removed once the baby is born, so they will prevent the recipient from medicating her whole life against the rejection of the organ. Giuseppe del Priore and his team have practiced the intervention in animals (monkeys, pigs, rabbits and rats), and ensure that the problem arisen in the transplant performed in Saudi Arabia can be avoided with the transplantation of larger arteries.

In principle, once the temporary transplant is performed, they will wait three months to make sure that the organ works and does not cause rejection, then they will introduce the embryo created by in vitro fertilization into the uterus.

At the moment, they are looking for candidates to carry out the uterus transplant, and if this time the success is complete, it could become an alternative for the treatment of infertility, especially in countries like Spain, in which the “mothers or rent wombs ”are illegal.

Undoubtedly, women who have lost their uterus due to cancer, an accident or some other problem, could realize their dream of being a mother. But it will not be easy, as the ethical and religious debate has already been noted. Even transplant and fertility specialists object that it is not known whether it is the benefit for the mother will be greater than the risk for her and her baby.

The debate is open, and here we hope you give us your opinion. If success is ensured in uterine transplants, should an organ that is not vital be transplanted? Should doctors decide for women who want to have a baby? Is it better to adopt ?. There are many questions, but surely more will be the answers. What do you think?
