A tomato will provide the recommended amount of folic acid daily

We already know how necessary folic acid is for our body and especially for the proper development of the future baby and although many foods contain it, especially those of green leaf, they work in others to expand the amount of folates that after their intake will go to stop our body providing all its benefits.

This is the case of the work of researchers at the University of Florida in Gainesville (USA), which they have genetically modified tomatoes that result in up to 25 times more folic acid than normal tomatoes. They claim that one of these transgenic tomatoes would provide the recommended amount of folic acid daily, which would also be a breakthrough for developing countries.

The researchers modified two varieties of tomatoes for study, and when crossing the two transgenic varieties, the folate content was 25 times higher in the resulting fruit compared to a normal tomato. Now it remains to verify that the concentrations of folate precursors are suitable for consumption and think that this same technique could be applied in other foods such as potatoes or wheat.

The study has been published in Proceedings magazine.
