The American Academy of Pediatrics updates its recommendations: up to 4 years

Road safety is an extremely important issue that belongs to everyone, but especially to those of us who have children, to ensure that they always travel safely. For some years now, campaigns and reports have been made about how safe it is for babies and children to travel backwards.

But, until what age is the minimum recommended by professionals? For some years, the American Academy of Pediatrics He recommended that at least two years of age, children should travel backwards, but now they have updated their recommendations, extending the minimum age.

Through an official statement published in AAP News, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the new recommendations on road safety were announced. One of the most important changes has been the elimination of the recommended age limit to take children backwards.

Previously, the AAP He advised to take them in the opposite direction to the march until 2 years of age, however, he has decided to eliminate this recommendation, replacing it with the following:

"Children must travel backwards in their child restraint system as long as possible, up to the limits specified by the chair model they use. This would include virtually all children under 2 years old and most children up to 4 years of age", they specify.

This arises because currently most of the car seats that are convertible or can be carried back, have height and weight limits wide enough to continue taking the children in the opposite direction to the march, beyond the previously recommended two years of age.

We had previously shared that firefighters in Madrid also recommended 4 years as the minimum age for all children to travel backwards. In addition, according to the "In Family" portal of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), includes the same recommendation in its General Guide for the use of SRI, in the "Golden Rules" section: "Place the chair as long as possible in the opposite direction to the march".

Similarly, we shared a few months ago the Decalogue of Child Road Safety, presented by the DGT and the Spanish Alliance for Child Road Safety (AESVI), which is also recommended take the child in the opposite direction to the march as long as possible, respecting the limitations established by the manufacturers of child restraint systems and the vehicle.

With these new recommendations, parents are advised not to turn the chair just because they have reached the age of two, but that if this is allowed, continue to take your children to counterattack as long as possible, preferably up to a minimum of four years of age.
