The umbilical cord: source of life, exhibition in Barcelona

From today, December 28 and until January 13, 2008, room 4 of the Garage of the Palau Robert in Barcelona hosts an exhibition that says everything under its title: “The umbilical cord: source of life”.

With this sample, organized by the Palau Robert and the Gynecology and Obstetrics Residents Unit of the Vall d'Hebró Hospital, it is intended to inform and promote the donation of umbilical cord blood at the time of delivery.

The exhibition shows six stages, The beginning: the beginning of a new life (pregnancy); Delivery and collection of cord blood; Transport and processing of cord blood in the blood bank; Therapeutic uses; Friends forever, and thank you very much. All stages can be seen through images. This year, donations of umbilical cord blood increased by 78.3% in Catalonia, as of December 19, 6,072 donations were registered. Thanks to them they have been able to save and cure many people, for now it is known that this blood transplant can be effective in more than 20 hematological and congenital diseases, such as leukemia, chronic granulomatous disease, Fanconi anemia, the syndrome Chediak-Higashi or Hurler's syndrome, among others
