Webcams to virtually visit the premature baby

The news is that a new pilot project called San Pedro de La Rioja Hospital will be implemented “Visit your baby” promoted by the Ministry of Health and the Telefónica Foundation.

It consists of installing camcorders in the cribs of the Neonatal Unit so that parents can follow the evolution of their babies through the internet.

My opinion is that it sounds great but it doesn't quite convince me. It seems fine and it seems fatal. I will explain why.

On the one hand, I understand the anguish of parents who are allowed to see and touch their children only once a day. The hospital establishes a strict regime of daily visits and parents cannot access at any time. In that sense, it seems good to me that at least they can visit them virtually. Doctors explain that stress will be reduced by not being able to be near the newborn in its first days of life.

But, on the other hand, what about skin-to-skin contact, with the baby's stress for not being with his mother? Have you not heard of the Kangaroo Method? It is proven that when the premature baby remains breastfed and in contact with the heat of his mother his evolution is faster and more favorable.

The serious problem is that they do not allow the mother to be with her baby and that they want to reassure the parents by placing a little camera in the baby's crib to visit it at a distance. For what, to touch it through the screen of an ordinate? Please! I am sorry, but I am exasperated that they want to disguise something that is wrongly conceived.

What the centers have to do is worry about why it is best for the recovery of premature baby, which is be with his mother. The other will be done with the best of intentions, but it is not the solution. Better leave the camaritas for nurseries that is where they are needed.
