World Autism Awareness Day

Today, April 2, is celebrated for first once World Autism Awareness Day. Remember that this disease consists of an alteration in the development of the brain that is expressed before three years of age, and that causes alterations in the behavior of these children, especially when it comes to relating to the environment around them.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the worldwide prevalence of this disease is around 21 autistic per 10,000 children. It affects one girl for every four boys. It is important to note that the cases diagnosed They overcome pediatric diabetes, cancer and AIDS cases together.

The celebration of this day was approved in November last year by the United Nations General Assembly. On this day, according to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, the UN reaffirms its commitment to the rights and well-being of people with this disability. "It is necessary to build environments in which they can prosper as future members of their communities," he said. The causes of this disease are still unknown. It is believed to have a genetic basis, but the genes involved have not yet been discovered.

One of the big problems of this alteration is the delay in diagnosis. Many times it is not detected until 3 or 4 years of age, coinciding with the child's schooling, which makes it very difficult for the treatment to be effective. Currently, it is based on drugs and therapy, but much remains to be done in this regard. At the moment, it is a disease without cure.

In Spain, unfortunately, there is very little funding for research projects on this disease. It is good that there are days like this that help us all become more aware of diseases that sometimes seem forgotten.
