Luna project in Madrid. The value of emotional support for mothers

The Luna Project is a space of maternity and upbringing in Madrid created by four mothers and therapists. Its main objective is to offer emotional support for women and families during pregnancy, birth and first parenting through individual sessions, in pairs or groups.

They consider (and I share it) that in this society motherhood is undervalued, and many women and families face upbringing alone without close references, so it is necessary to have this emotional support: to be heard without being judged, to know other mothers, receive guidance on parenting, express contradictory feelings, share experiences, etc.

They mention all these experiences that mothers can feel:

  • Feeling of "overflow"
  • Not being able to enjoy what is happening
  • Anguish or anxiety crisis
  • Not being able to concentrate on anything
  • Mood swings, such as sadness and irritability
  • Not knowing who to turn to
  • The day is very long being alone
  • They say we have postpartum depression
  • We can't hold the baby anymore in arms
  • Feel disconnected with the baby
  • The baby doesn't stop crying and we don't know what's wrong with him
  • Many fears arise and very intense
  • Physical problems such as headaches, stomach aches, tachycardia or shortness of breath
  • Thoughts of harming us or the baby
  • Feeling vulnerable in defenseless.

All these emotions were up to the hour undervalued or silenced, but it is very important that mothers recognize them, express them, face them and receive the necessary professional help to avoid extreme cases such as the recent consequences of several postpartum depressions in Spain.

I congratulate these four entrepreneurial mothers for the initiative and hopefully many more parenting spaces are created, both private and public. In fact, this was one of the Coordinator's demands for new family policies.

I totally agree with your approach and I also consider that the loneliness is the enemy number 1 of modern and urban mothers, and that feeling the support, even for a few hours a week of other mothers, is a very important support.

That is at least a substitute for the TRIBU they have in Iceland and other cultures, and how decisive it is in the person's happiness.

We can find meetings of mothers if we have a group of friends in the same conditions as us, in parenting groups (although there are few), in breastfeeding groups (close to this issue), and for example in Catalonia it exists in municipal centers Children a meeting place for mothers and their children under 6 years with monitors and large play spaces. They are called Espai Nadó, Espai Joc and Espai Familiar, and we'll talk about them.

Both concepts (private with therapists and public only meeting) are very beneficial for nurturing and a healthy society.
