New recommendations on the need for vitamin D

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has pointed out the need to double the amount of vitamin D recommended so far For babies, children and teenagers. The reason is that certain clinical studies have shown that this vitamin not only prevents rickets, but also cures it, and also brings other benefits to adults.

Because an adequate dose of vitamin D throughout childhood reduces the risk of osteoporosis in adulthood. And for adults it could be important to protect the immune system and prevent infections, autoimmune diseases, cancer and diabetes.

Therefore, from the AAP indicate that this vitamin should be consumed in greater amounts. Currently, the recommended amount is 200 IU (international unit in pharmacology) per day, which should be 400 IU daily. However, at least until now, the Spanish Association of Pediatrics has not changed its recommendations in this regard.

According to Frank Greer, AAP doctor, who released the new recommendations on Monday at a meeting in Boston, "We are doubling the recommended amount of vitamin D that children need per day because evidence has shown that this could have benefits to long term in health. "

Remember that sunlight is the best source of vitamin D, so a moderate exposure helps to synthesize it. Environmental pollution, sun creams and clothing limit the amount of vitamin D that the body can synthesize from sunlight, and then a vitamin D supplement would be beneficial to prevent complications.
