Colecho could increase the risk of sudden death

We know that there is a lot of controversy that exists about the possible benefits or disadvantages that the baby can bring to the baby, that is, sleeping in bed with his parents. In our blog we have talked on several occasions about the reasons why this practice should be carried out and also about the reasons why we should think about it.

It has already been commented that some studies speak of the possibility that sleeping with the baby may increase the risk of sudden death. The latest study that affects this theory has been published in the month of October in one of the most prestigious journals in the world of pediatrics, "Journal of Pediatrics."

Before the 1990s, sudden death rates among infants were alarming. Thanks to the new recommendations that say that the baby should be put on his back, the cases decreased by 50 percent. But the truth is that since this, the incidence has not changed again or decreased.

One of the co-investigators who discovered that the child should sleep on his back, Dr. Linda Y. Fu of the Washington National Children's Medical Center, has become involved again to try to reduce the number of cases, investigating other factors that could influence such as Sleeping with the baby

For this, 708 mothers of children up to 8 months of age were studied. 48.6 percent of them slept in the same room as their son, but not in the same bed, 32.5 percent shared the same bed and 18.9 percent in a different room.

They claim that sleeping in the same bed is the risk factor you were looking for. The study recognizes that they do not know why it would be associated with sudden death syndrome but says it would not be due to the fact of sharing the bed, but for other reasons, such as using soft mattresses or several sheets.

Currently the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies sleep in the parents' room, but in another bed or crib.
