Skirt uniform will no longer be mandatory for girls in Galicia: one more step in favor of gender equality

It is true that some schools with uniforms adapt to social reality and allow girls to decide if they want to wear a skirt or pants. But they are still counted cases, because in most Spanish centers there are different uniforms according to sex and they are forced to adopt them.

That is why it is good news that the Galician Parliament yesterday approved a non-law proposal to eliminate the distinction of school uniforms for boys and girls.

That means From the next academic year the Galician schools will not be able to force their students to go dressed differently according to sex or impose on girls who wear skirts.

A step towards equality

The political group In Marea went to Parliament with an initiative that defended, in the words of its deputy Luca Chao:

"The elimination of obstacles to achieve equality also involves the elimination of differentiated attire in public centers and also the elimination of differentiated attire in schools."

The text details that "All those schools that decide that students wear a school uniform, do not oblige a dress code differentiated by sex between students."

What remains to be seen is what kind of measures the Xunta de Galicia will take to ensure compliance with this pact from the 2019-2020 academic year.

Freedom of choice and comfort

In defense of the proposal, the deputy of En Marea pointed out that this initiative is necessary because the skirt can even condition the freedom of movement of the students, a garment that "It constitutes a symbol of traditional gender roles":

"We are teaching our daughters in schools to be beautiful rather than happy, we want happy girls to play in the yards, to be free and own themselves."

In his speech, Luca Chao also mentioned that the ideal formula would be to impose "a unique uniform" in the schools, but left in the hands of the Xunta the drafting of a dress code.

For the deputy, the skirt is much more than a symbol, it is an element that "Perpetuates the traditional division of roles that are imposed on girls and boys since they are young".

From the parliamentary group In Marea they emphasize that this agreement is very important to promote the decision-making capacity and autonomy of girls and an advance for "Let's never talk about rights if it's not for all women."

Approved unanimously at the initiative of En Marea, defended by @LucaChao_ so that from next year all the centers that decide that or light uniform students do not obey a dress code differentiated by sex, and that the students can elixir or pants. pic.twitter.com/trRztoLPFp

Previous initiatives

In September of last year we echoed the non-law proposal that Podemos presented to the Congress of Deputies to eliminate the difference of uniforms by sex in schools and in the workplace.

In Babies and more Unisex uniforms for school and work, the debate comes to Congress

Although there are schools that advocate for equality of uniformity between boys and girls, especially in the United Kingdom.

Hopefully the Galician initiative will serve as a starting point for the rest of Spain and our sons and daughters can freely choose how they want to be dressed in class: whether with pants or with skirts.

And that we do not have to re-emphasize such a measure, because that will mean that there is no discrimination based on sex in schools and that equality will also be a reality in classrooms, where tomorrow's adults are educated.
