Obese women should only gain between 5 and 9 kilos in pregnancy

The ideal weight gain during pregnancy for women of normal weight is between 9 and 12 kilos. It is a safe increase for the health of the mother and the baby, which allows its correct development and growth, while making it easier to cope with pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

However, for obese women who suffer a significant excess of weight before becoming pregnant, the recommendations regarding the kilos to gain during pregnancy are different: should increase between 5 and 9 kilos.

Since there are more and more obese women of reproductive age in today's society, it is important to extend this advice and control the weight of the pregnant woman to avoid complications. The specialists affirm that even increasing less than 9 kilos can give birth to healthy babies.

Already obese women are at greater risk of complications such as preeclampsia (three times more common in obese women), gestational diabetes, premature delivery, and even obesity can increase the risk of abortion. Therefore, it is essential for these women to achieve a healthy weight before becoming pregnant and once they have managed to face a pregnancy with greater guarantees to reduce possible disorders.

Increasing excess weight during pregnancy means that it is more difficult to regain weight after the baby is born. We already know that women usually have a few extra pounds left after giving birth. For many, they are very difficult kilos to lose that accumulate pregnancy after pregnancy, increasing the risks to their health over the years.
