Summer precautions: to the pool with children

The hot days have arrived and it is usual for us to spend fun times with our kids in the pool. It may be the first year that you take your baby to the water or that you already have somewhat older children. Be that as it may, it is imperative that we take some precautions to avoid nasty scares.

Unfortunately, drowning is one of the most frequent causes of accidental death among children under five years of age, so it is essential to prevent any type of risk.

The most common is that the child falls into the water at a time of distraction from the parents or the person who is in charge of it with which we must be very aware of our children when we go to a pool.

Let's see some tips to keep in mind when we go to the pool with the children:

  • As soon as you enter the pool, place the sleeves, the float or the safety system that we use. Needless to say, we must verify that they are in perfect condition and without punctures.

  • Do not stop watching them for a second when they are in the water. A phone call or any distraction, however silly it may seem, can be fatal.

  • In residential pools, place fences or safety barriers that prevent children from passing without supervision.

  • It is convenient for children to learn to swim since they were little since, in addition to being beneficial for their development, it is another measure of prevention if they accidentally fall into the water.

  • Anyway, that they know how to swim does not imply that we should not be attentive. Children can easily get tired or sin of overconfidence and get into remote places. We always have to be aware of them when they are in the water.

  • When it comes to babies, we should not only be aware when they are inside but also when they play at the edge of the pool. Remember that babies are not aware of the danger they face. They can throw away any toy and want to rescue it at the risk of falling into the water. Keep all toys out of the water.

  • If there is a children's pool, better take them there, as it is more controllable for parents. Otherwise, it is necessary to restrict the use of the pool to a certain area, close to the stairs and the edges that can be reached if you feel tired.

  • There are some safety gadgets to prevent drowning such as bracelets to place the child or alarms to place on the edge of the pool that warns us in case the child falls into the water. Don't be waiting for the "plof"; They can fall without making noise.

  • Drowning is the most serious of the accidents that can occur in the water, but there are also others such as blows or sharp games. Warn children of the risks of throwing themselves too close to the edge, preventing them from approaching drains, caution on slides, etc.

  • In the community pools identify and locate the lifeguard to turn to him in case of any emergency.

  • Finally, in the event of an accident, keep common sense and always have the emergency telephone number to call while we begin the resuscitation maneuvers.
