Cooking with children: Christmas cookies

The kitchen work is very fun for children. They are an excellent opportunity to share a good time with our young children, and if we choose the tasks they can do well, the experience will be unforgettable for everyone. Therefore, as my son is older, I stayed with my nieces to prepare some with them Christmas cookies

The only thing to keep in mind, if you are going to cook with children, especially if they are very small, is to monitor at all times what they are doing, because the kitchen is a place full of potentially dangerous products and accessories. But with the most elementary precautions, you will all enjoy a lot and they will be willing to repeat as soon as you give them the opportunity.

Ingredients for about 36 cookies

  • 250 grams of flour, 100 grams of butter, 100 grams of lard, 100 grams of sugar, 2 eggs, 1 pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of vanilla essence.
  • To decorate, sugar glass.

How to make Christmas cookies

We started, melting the butter in the microwave in about 30 seconds at medium power. Mix the butter with the sugar and an egg in a bowl, stirring with the rods. Add the butter and the other egg, and work until you get a kind of ointment. We make the children participate, putting on an apron so they feel like cooks and we are explaining everything we do.

Add the flour little by little, and mix it with a fork. When the dough begins to be less sticky and its texture is similar to plasticine, we can give it to children to participate in the kneading, which is usually a very fun task. My nieces, They looked at what I was doing, while each one kneaded her cookie dough ball.

Once we have the very homogeneous dough, we wrap it in a kitchen plastic and leave it in the fridge for about 30 minutes to harden a bit and it is easier to stretch it and then cut the different shapes of our Christmas cookies.

After half an hour, we stretch the dough balls with a rolling pin, placing them between two baking papers or between two kitchen plastics, so they don't stick to the work table. This work is one of the most fun for children, since the roller sway is very attractive. Watch so that they do not overdo it, since the interesting thing is that our dough is thick between half and one centimeter.

To make our Christmas cookies, we have used some cookie cutters with shapes of stars, Christmas firs or the star of Bethlehem. These pasta cutters can be found without difficulty and at a very good price in many neighborhood stores, hardware stores, and of course, in specialty stores. The task of cutting each cookie is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyed by children.

We place the cookies on a tray covered with baking paper or with a silicone sheet for ovens, and we do them at 180º for about 10 minutes, depending on each oven, taking into account that they will have to be taken out, when they have a light golden color. Once outside, let the cookies cool slightly and pass them to a rack to finish hardening.

This is another of the funniest moments, the time to drink the sugar glass, and sprinkle as if it were snow on the cookies. Let this be done by the children, let it be they will have a great time, but avoid exceeding them and leave them covered, because they are better only with a small layer.

Another thing, a detail that you will surely appreciate if you want cook with childrenIt is the following: keep a camera close by, because the children in the kitchen are very expressive and happening. If not, look at Diego's face, in the last photo, that he had the happy idea of approaching the flour until he practically covered his face.
