Care for children in the heat wave

We are going through an African heat wave that raises the thermometers at temperatures close to 40 degrees. Babies and young children are especially vulnerable to high temperatures, so we must extreme care these days before the heat wave that we live in Spain.

Having a thermoregulation mechanism still immature, exposure to high temperatures can cause children to quickly lose fluid causing dehydration or heat stroke. To avoid this, we recommend you follow the following tips.

As far as possible, avoid taking the baby in the central hours of the day, between 11 and 18 hours. In case you have no other option, you should always remain in the shade, with a cap and sunscreen.

You have to keep the baby well hydrated offering water more often, even before he is thirsty. When you feel thirsty, it means that the body already accuses the lack of fluid. It is recommended to give juices (preferably natural), water or dairy every two hours.

Hydration is also provided through food, mainly seasonal vegetables and fruits such as watermelon, melon, peaches, plums, etc.

In case of breastfeeding babies, it is not necessary to offer them water separately because breast milk calms your thirst and contains everything the baby needs. Simply offer them the chest more often.

Remember to always apply sunscreen in abundance, replenish every two hours, do not forget the use of caps or scarves that cover the head and often refresh the baby's head, neck and wrists.

Finally, to pass the heat wave children must carry fresh clothes. Take advantage too fans and air-conditioned sites to cope with high temperatures as much as possible.
