Marijuana use harms teenagers' intelligence

Another study on marijuana indicates that regular consumption since adolescence damages intelligence, memory and long-term care capacity. That is, marijuana can cause lasting damage to intelligence and affect a person's attention and memory if they start using it before the age of 18.

And is that the study published in the journal "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" (PNAS), I could not find the link, shows the results, for years, by an international team of scientists among more than 1,000 young people in New Zeeland The conclusion is that those people who started smoking marijuana in adolescence and continued to consume it had a decrease in their IQ.

Quantitatively it was concluded that the IQ of the participants in the study from the time they were 13, until they turned 38, decreased by eight basis points Twenty-five years later. In addition, the study also indicated that stopping marijuana does not seem to serve to change the long-term effects.

I find it incredible and I congratulate those responsible for the project, because in 1972 and 1973, samples and measurements of 1,037 children were taken in Dunedin (New Zealand) and waited until they turned 38 and their situation was reviewed for all those who continued to consume Marijuana

Also when they turned 38 all the participants in the study underwent psychological tests to test their memory, mental speed, reasoning and visual attention. The conclusion was that the results were worse among those who used marijuana regularly when they were teenagers.

Although it seems that eight basic points is little, the intellectual coefficient can be statistically related to access to higher education and income, better health and a longer life. Apparently the changes are motivated because before the age of 18 the brain is developing and may be more vulnerable to the damage caused by marijuana.

It seems to me that it is very important to be informed about the consequences of marijuana use and more when it refers to consumption among adolescents.
