If your son likes the adventure novel and still doesn't know Percy Jackson, don't make him wait any longer

We recently attended the movie premiere of "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters," a film for young and family audiences that is based on "The Sea of Monsters", the second part of Percy Jacson and the gods of Olympus, written by the prolific Rick Riordan.

It goes without saying that the written text is much richer in nuances (and less in special effects), personally I am one of the people who read books and watch movies, they are going to like the book more ... usually. The series about Percy Jackson (a teenage son of a god and a mortal, is intended for boys and girls over 12 years old: these are books with a lot of content and a relatively complex narrative level (no drawings, of course). My son is smaller and has read it, I thought I understood (about 10 years are not so talkative with parents) that although "not bad", "you know that I prefer scary stories." I love that I was so selective, and until I was 14 years old I could not read a youth novel, although by then I was much more flexible as a reader. About "The sea of monsters", I have to say that as a good bestseller, it is exciting and entertaining, but it is also noted that the author knows very well the boys and girls of the age in which the protagonists are, it was not in vain for many years Professor of Institute in San Francisco and Texas, until the "bug" of the writing stung him, and now he writes r full time.

The protagonists are very well defined, and I love how each one of them is characterized, with its peculiarities and the relationship they establish. Although it was a success in sales, it has quite original things, and this combination is attractive to me. I think it is very suitable for preteen boys and girls, who like adventures, and intrigue; It is also good to dream for a while, because not everyone goes to an Institute where a ball game during recess ends in battle against the giants.

The Sea of Monsters is the exciting continuation of the adventure series Percy Jackson and the gods of Olympus, initiated with "The thief of lightning." In the 21st century, the ancient Greek gods have created a secret world around us, where Mount Olympus is located above the Empire State Building and the kingdom of Hades in the basement of Los Angeles

And if in a matter of adaptations to the cinema we had already seen "Percy Jackson and the thief of Lightning", the second book we have read is "The battle of the labyrinth" (the fourth installment); in it Percy is no longer a child but a teenager, and therefore, more aware of their emotions and their abilities.

About to start high school first, Percy Jackson does not expect strong emotions, but rather a dull boredom. But when an old friend shows up at the new school, followed by a couple of devilish cheerleaders, events rush and everything starts to go from bad to worse. Cronos, the evil lord of the Titans, threatens to destroy the Half-Blood Camp, where young demigods take refuge. To avoid this, Percy and his friends must embark on a risky search through the labyrinth, an underground world plagued with fearsome traps and evil creatures, designed to end those who dare to desecrate it.

Its about a book denser but equally entertaining and very easy to read, and at times very educational for young readers, for whom the main concern will be to follow the plot, and if they succeed they will discover many interesting things.

By the way, without taking credit for the film, it is worth mentioning that those who have read the book will find it difficult to place themselves with the protagonists, since the literary Percy has 12 years in "The thief of lightning", so in the second film he we put one or two more years, but the actors are already close to 20.

Otherwise, a lot of action, companionship (and in the last installments of love) between the characters, Greek mythology, fantasy in abundance, and a Percy that is growing and overcoming all the difficulties that life presents to him, and is very vital and positive, although he has been expelled from several centers, and has (according to the story) ADHD and dyslexia.

We thank Salamandra publishing house for giving us these two volumes. I think - if gender attracts you - it will be a good gift for children who have started Secondary, or smaller but good readers, and I am not mistaken in stating that more than one mother and one father will end up reading Percy Jackson.
