The Senate urges the Ministry of Education to include first aid and emergency knowledge in the curricula

The majority of Senate political groups have passed a motion urging the Ministry of Education to include the teaching of first aid knowledge, road safety, self-protection and emergencies.

The motion was drawn up as a result of the popular initiative (carried out by volunteers and emergency professionals), called "Children of today can save a life tomorrow."

According to the Spanish Heart Foundation (which supports the initiative), only 10% of the Spanish population knows how to perform life support maneuvers correctly after witnessing a cardiorespiratory arrest. And it is estimated that with proper training, 70 percent of cases could be saved, after having suffered such an event

The first big step, the legal recognition of the motion, has already been achieved. The proposal suggests that, soon, it is the Ministry of Education that promote, together with the autonomous communities, the way to develop this formative action, that is, the contents, the subject where this knowledge should be included, the recommended teaching hours and the required training of the professors or professionals who are going to give the training talks.

The proposal transferred to the Ministry of Education has the main objective of introduce these contents in the school, both in primary and secondary, as already taught in other European countries (as well as in Japan and the United States), where saving a life is considered a priority.
