Why do babies have so soft ears?

When Aran, my middle child, was born, I was surprised to see that one of his ears was completely folded in half. He had been in the pelvis for more than a week in such a way (an entire week of contractions every 5 minutes) that he also had plagiocephaly more than evident. I doubted if that ear would finally look good, but my fears (mild, that he was born premature and his ear was the least worrying) soon dissipated when he saw that as time went by he put himself in his place.

This story can happen on other occasions: you put the baby to sleep, it stays on its side, has a good time and when you take it you realize that it has a fully bent ear. You fear having done something terrible by deforming her, but then, immediately, everything returns to its place. Maybe that's why you ask yourself: Why do babies have so soft ears?

The truth is that the ears are made mostly of cartilage. This makes them soft and, in addition, can take different forms without deforming them for life. To make a simile, you just have to press the tip of the nose (your nose) to the side for a few seconds. When we release it, our nose is crooked for a little while and the children have a special grace (haven't you ever done it? You are already taking it), but then everything returns to its place.

But our ears are more rigid

Well yes, and bigger. It is what happens over time, that the structures are no longer as tender as it happens in babies and the ears lose elasticity and malleability. In fact, it is not the only part of the body that loses elasticity, and to show yourself. Try to adopt the positions that babies take and you will realize that you can no longer do what you did when you had a few weeks or months: goodbye elasticity.

An anecdote, finally, that I don't know if it will be true. My little brother has always had a nostril bigger than the other. My mother explained to us once that at birth she seemed to see him a little bit in that hole and He put the tip of his little finger to get it out, making the hole more open.

I find it hard to believe that the reason is that because, as I say, It is also a cartilage that should return to its position without problems, just as after breastfeeding with the nose flat on the chest, the babies' nose looks good, normal. My mother, on the other hand, is convinced that it was her and we no longer deny her. In the background it is funny to see that detail left such an effect on his son's nose.
