Childbirth is not the main cause of cerebral palsy in babies

In the summer courses of El Escorial, Dr. Ángel Aguarón, head of obstetrics at the Gregorio Marañón hospital in Madrid has spoken about "New aspects of cerebral palsy", making a very interesting revelation.

Before it was very common to blame cerebral palsy on the lack of oxygen that the baby could suffer during childbirth.

However, it ensures that thanks to the new techniques that allow you to monitor the well-being of the baby at all times and resort to a C-section if necessary, "childbirth only represents 10% of the possible causes of cerebral palsy".

Currently, 2 out of every 1,000 children are born with cerebral palsy, which according to the specialist shows that childbirth does not represent the main cause of this injury, but rather comes from before, from pregnancy.

For him, it is premature births and assisted reproduction techniques that are causing an increase in twin deliveries (usually born before term), the two main causes that can cause cerebral palsy in the fetus.

The doctor explains that a premature baby has more difficulty than a term baby has to get used to the lack of oxygen, which can lead to mental retardation with disability and language problems.

In short, the causes point to prematurity at birth, a phenomenon that is increasing and that is becoming one of the great medical problems of today.
