When to take the basal temperature

It is advisable to start taking the temperature from the first day of menstruation and go writing down every day.

You have to take the temperature every morning just awake, on or by the bed. This method is not reliable if the temperature is taken at different times of the day. This avoids variations that could be caused by physical activity and other factors.

How to take the basal temperature

  • We prepared the thermometer the night before, placing it on the table, by hand and ready to take the temperature immediately the next morning. If we have to get up, move and look for the thermometer, the measurement will not be valid.

  • It is important to take note of temperature fluctuations for several months, to detect possible irregularities in the cycle and establish our calendar. Only if we observe regularly in those months we noted, can we predict the days of ovulation.

  • If the woman has a fever or is sick, the data for those days are of no use, and this fact should be noted.

  • You should always try to use the same thermometer, without changing it during the cycle (unless it breaks) since there could be differences between one and the other, and as we speak of such narrow and precise margins, measurement would not work.

  • We must take the temperature in the same part of the body, so that we allow always similar conditions that do not alter the measurement result.

  • We can always choose the oral or oral temperature, placing the tip of the thermometer under the tongue and with the lips closed.

  • We can always choose the rectal temperature, inserting the tip of the thermometer into the rectum while lying on one side with the knees bent.

  • We can always choose the vaginal temperature, choosing a comfortable posture and introducing the tip of the thermometer into the vagina, always remaining in the same position.

In Babies and more, what is the use of the synthetic method?
  • During the measurement it is better not to speak or move, to remain calm and relaxed, without activity. The temperature must be taken during five minutes per clock.

  • We will write down in the observations of the table any circumstance that can alter the temperature, if we have not followed the previous advice, if we get up with stress, if we have just had nightmares, if we have gone to the bathroom before, any disease, alcohol consumption last night.

How to identify your fertile days?

If we have completed the entry correctly for several months we can establish a more or less regular pattern.

Before ovulation, the basal temperature usually ranges between 36.5ºC and 36.7ºC. As a consequence of hormonal changes, said temperature usually increases between 0.3ºC and 0.5ºC in the two or three days after ovulation. The increase is maintained until the end of the cycle, when the next menstrual period begins.

If in our annotations for several months we observe a regular cycle (temperature increase from the same day), we know that by having sex from the days before that temperature change we will be more likely to get pregnant.

In Babies and more Ovulation: how to know if I'm ovulating

This is because in theory we will have already ovulated, and the ovule is already arranged even if the temperature change does not indicate it, which will occur two or three days later.

In any case, it is safest to combine this with other methods to know what the days of ovulation are, observing the menstrual cycle in the calendar and the vaginal flow as we said.

If we control the cervical flow and note the changes in the same place as the temperature, most women will have an increase in temperature after ovulation and a change in the texture of the cervical mucus before and during the ovulatory period.
